William CHATFIELD (c.1757 - 1817) married Hannah HOLMES on
the 11th December 1785 at Fletching, both 'of this parish'. In the 1803
Militia list he is described as a servant, willing to stand. The
Chatfields were well known to the Overseers of the Poor. The "Poor Book"
for 1784-87 contains annual sums paid to a John Gaston in respect of
William Chatfield's rent.from 1801 and it appears that William was in
receipt of regular parish aid, mainly in flour, but occasionally in cash.
William was buried at Maresfield on the 27th March 1817 age 60 and
Hannah on the 20th October 1850 age 85 'of Piltdown'.
Children of William and Hannah were:-
- Sarah, baptised 29th April 1787 Maresfield and married John HOBBS on the 8th November 1809 also at Maresfield
- Elizabeth baptised 11th April 1790, married Richard HELMSLEY on 26th October 1809 and was buried at Maresfield on the 10th June 1827.
- John baptised 11th April 1790, married Elizabeth PECKHAM on 4th May 1814 and was buried at Maresfield on the 5th July 1868.
- Mary Ann baptised 22nd June 1892, married John DRAWBRIDGE on 27th May 1822 at Maresfield.

- Thomas, baptised 3rd July 1797 at Maresfield was a shepherd
and ploughman.
He was convicted at Lewes Sussex Quarter Sessions on
8th April 1831 aged 30 for stealing six pennyworth of faggots and stealing
four fowls and sentenced to be transported for life but then reduced to 14
years.
Also described as 'a troublesome person.'
He left behind a wife
and five children. Transported on the William Glen Anderson he arrived
at Hobart, Van Dieman's Land on the 1st November 1831. His
convict Number was 1295. He appears to have been assigned
to a Lieutenant Sam Hill on his
arrival in Hobart.' The Tasmania Records Office has
been searched for details of his life and presumed death somewhere in
Tasmania but without success.
